By Car

Getting to Saamal Cenote by car is relatively straightforward and allows you to explore the area at your own pace, which I always enjoy, primarily to manage my schedule.

From Cancun

If departing from Cancun, take the 180D highway westbound towards Valladolid. The car journey from Cancun to Valladolid lasts about two hours. Once in Valladolid, exit to Valladolid-Ticuch Road and follow the signs to Hacienda Selva Maya, where the cenote is located. The trip from the centre of Valladolid to the hacienda will take up to 10 minutes.

From Merida

From Merida, the capital of Yucatan, you should take the 180D highway eastbound towards Valladolid. This car journey lasts approximately an hour and a half. Upon arriving in Valladolid, follow the instructions I mentioned before to reach the hacienda.

I strongly recommend ensuring you have enough fuel before you set off, as gas stations can be sparse in some parts of the highway. Also, remember that the 180D is a toll highway, so you should have some cash on hand.

Travelling by Shared Van

If you prefer to travel using public transportation, locally known as “colectivos,” shared vans are an economical and popular way to explore the Yucatan Peninsula.

From Valladolid, you can catch a colectivo on Calle 39, between Calles 46 and 48. There are regular departures to Hacienda Selva Maya, and the trip lasts 15 minutes.

If you’re starting in Cancun or Merida, you must take a colectivo or bus to Valladolid. The ADO company offers several schedules throughout the day from both locations. Once in Valladolid, you can follow the directions I gave earlier to reach the cenote.

Remember that the schedules and routes of the colectivos can change, so I advise you to verify the most updated information locally.

The weather in Yucatan is primarily divided into two seasons: the dry and the wet season. The dry season, running from November to April, is widely considered the best time to visit Cenote Saamal.
