About Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul, is a true natural jewel of the Riviera Maya. Its name comes from the intense blue of its waters, strikingly contrasting with the lush green vegetation surrounding the cenote, creating a visually breathtaking landscape.

This cenote is open, meaning it is not covered by a rock dome-like closed cenote. This allows the sun’s rays to illuminate the cenote’s crystalline waters, enabling you to appreciate the clarity of the water and the thriving underwater life it hosts.

The cenote is home to various fish species and aquatic plants, making it a popular spot for snorkelling.

Moreover, the surrounding area is a haven of tranquillity, with picnic areas and relaxing spaces. You’ll also find shallower areas at the cenote, perfect for those who want to take a refreshing dip.

But what truly makes this place special is its atmosphere. Being there, you’ll feel a unique connection with nature. It’s a place that invites you to leave behind the worries of everyday life and immerse yourself in a world of natural beauty and tranquillity.

If you’re a nature lover and looking for a unique experience in the Riviera Maya, the Azul Cenote is a place you must visit.

In this guide, we’ll share our experiences from multiple visits, tell you how to get to the Cenote Azul, the best time to visit, and provide some practical tips to make the most of your visit. Let’s dive in!

Cenote Azul

Where is the Cenote Azul located?

The Cenote Azul is nestled along Federal Highway 307, at Km 265.5, between Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen, in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

This slice of natural beauty is a mere 22 kilometres south of Playa del Carmen and 64 kilometres north of Tulum, two of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Riviera Maya.

You’ll find it on the west side of the highway. So if you’re coming from Playa del Carmen, you’ll need to make a U-turn at the next crossing once you spot the cenote on your right.

If you rely on a GPS system or a map application, a simple search for “Cenote Azul” will guide you straight to the cenote’s parking lot.

⚠ Remember, we’re referring to the Azul Cenote of Riviera Maya, not the Cenote Azul of Bacalar – another wonder about 2.5 hours to the south.

Its advantageous location makes the Blue Cenote highly accessible for those in the Riviera Maya. Its proximity to Playa del Carmen makes it a popular choice for various tours, beloved by locals and tourists alike.

How to Get to the Cenote Azul?

No matter how you decide to get there, the key is to arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy the Blue Cenote in all its glory.

By Car

If driving from Playa del Carmen, you must take Federal Highway 307 heading south. You’ll be on the road for about 20 minutes until you spot the Blue Cenote on your right. Since it’s located on the west side of the highway, you’ll need to drive past the cenote and make a U-turn at the next intersection. After the U-turn, you can enter the cenote’s parking lot.

If you’re coming from Tulum, you’ll take the same Federal Highway 307 but head north towards Playa del Carmen. In this case, the cenote will be on your left. The entrance to the parking lot is easily visible and well-signposted.

Having your own or a rented car allows you to arrive and leave at your own pace, but remember that parking is limited and can fill up quickly, especially on the busiest days.

By Colectivo

If you don’t have a car, don’t worry, you can still get to the Blue Cenote quickly and inexpensively using local public transportation. These colectivos pick up and drop off passengers along Federal Highway 307.

To catch a Colectivo, go to the Colectivo station in Playa del Carmen or Tulum and look for one heading towards the Blue Cenote. Colectivos pass regularly, so you won’t have to wait long. Once you get on, tell the driver to drop you off at the Blue Cenote. When you finish your visit, you can catch another colectivo back from the same spot where you were dropped off.

Other Transport

If you prefer a more comfortable option and don’t mind spending more, you could opt for a taxi or a private transport service. A taxi from Playa del Carmen or Tulum can cost around USD20-30 each way, depending on the season and the time of day.

Another option is to book a tour to the Blue Cenote, which usually includes round-trip transportation from your hotel, entrance to the cenote, and in some cases, snorkelling gear and a guide. This can be a good option if you prefer organising everything in advance.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Cenote Azul?

The Blue Cenote Riviera Maya is a natural wonder you can enjoy all year round. However, your experience can vary depending on when you choose to visit. Here are some tips on the best time to plan your visit:

Dry Season (November to April)

I recommend visiting the Blue Cenote between November and April if you want to avoid the rain and enjoy Riviera Maya’s driest weather.

During these months, precipitation is less likely, meaning your visit is less likely to be interrupted by unexpected rainfall.

Additionally, winter offers cooler temperatures, making your swimming experience in the cenote even more enjoyable. However, remember that this is also peak tourism season in the Riviera Maya, so you will likely encounter more visitors at the cenote.

Rainy Season (May to October)

If you prefer visiting during a time of year with fewer crowds, consider the rainy season, which runs from May to October.

During these months, you’re more likely to experience some rain, especially in the afternoon. However, these showers are typically brief and can provide a refreshing break from the heat.

Moreover, the rainfall also makes the vegetation surrounding the cenote especially green and lush, adding to the location’s natural beauty. And, of course, with fewer visitors, you can enjoy the Blue Cenote more peacefully and personally.

What’s the Best Time to Visit?

Cenote Azul is open every day from 8:30 to 5:30 in the evening. However, if you want the best experience possible, I recommend planning your visit in advance.

Early in the Morning

If you like to beat the crowds and enjoy Cenote Azul in its most calm and serene state, then getting there early in the morning, right when it opens, is your best bet.

During the early morning hours, you’re less likely to come across large groups of tourists, allowing you to explore the cenote at your own pace.

Moreover, the water tends to be calmer and clearer in the morning, allowing you to enjoy swimming and snorkelling without any worries.

If you’re a photography enthusiast, you’ll also love the soft, natural morning light to capture stunning images of the cenote.

In the Afternoon

If you’re not an early bird, don’t worry. Visiting Cenote Azul in the afternoon also has its perks. Although there might be more visitors, the afternoon sunlight can make the cenote water appear even bluer and brighter.

After 4:00 p.m., the crowd usually starts to thin out, so you could have a more peaceful experience.

Remember that the last entry to the cenote is usually around 5:00 p.m., so arrive with plenty of time to enjoy your visit.

If all that swimming and exploring work up your appetite, don’t worry. There’s a quaint little snack area within the Azul Cenote where you can grab a bite and some refreshing drinks.

However, if you’re craving something heartier, pack your meal and enjoy a picnic in the designated areas. Just remember to pick up after yourself and leave the place as you found it.

Where Can You Store Your Belongings?

As for your belongings, the Cenote has lockers where you can safely store your valuable items while making the most of your time in the water. There is a small additional fee for using the lockers, but the peace of mind of knowing your personal items are safe and secure is worth it.

Aside from enjoying the water of the Cenote, there are plenty of other activities you can indulge in around the area:
